Specifically what is mesothelioma? - Mesothelioma cancer is a cancer influencing the mesothelial cells which cover most internal internal organs. There are two main types of mesothelioma; pleural and peritoneal.
In 2013, 706 new cases of mesothelioma were diagnosed countrywide, and it is more common in old men.
In 2014, there were 692 deaths caused by mesothelioma in Australia.
Pleural mesothelioma
This can be a type of cancer that starts off in the membrane that covers the lungs. Even though it develops in the chest and involves the lining of the lung area, it is not a lung cancer and it is treated differently to lung cancer.
Pleural mesothelioma cancer is the most frequent kind of mesothelioma cancer, and accounts for about 90% of all mesotheliomas.
Indications of pleural mesothelioma cancer
The main indications of pleural mesothelioma include:
- difficulty breathing - which usually aggravates with activity or when prone
- chest pain or pain in the glenohumeral joint and upper arm
- damage of appetite, weight reduction
- persistent cough or a change in a model's usual cough
- heavy sweat, particularly at night.
Peritoneal mesothelioma cancer
The other main type is peritoneal mesothelioma, accounting for about 10% of cases. That develops in the lining of the abdomen.
Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma
The main indications of peritoneal mesothelioma include:
- swollen or painful abdomen
- lack of|loss in hunger
- nausea
- fever
- bowel or urinary problems.
